Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk or electric mixer
  • Cake pan (8-inch round or square)
  • Oven

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup milk
  • 4-5 fresh plums, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line an 8-inch cake pan.
  • In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  • In another bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with milk, until combined.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Arrange the sliced plums on top, gently pressing them into the batter. Optionally, sprinkle brown sugar over the plums for added sweetness.
  • Bake for 45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cake cool for 10 minutes before removing it from the pan. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

For best results, use ripe but firm plums. You can also substitute plums with other stone fruits like peaches or apricots. For extra flavor, serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
