Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Food processor (optional)
  • Skillet or grill
  • Spatula
  • Baking sheet (optional)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup black beans cooked and mashed
  • 1/2 cup oats (or breadcrumbs)
  • 1/2 cup carrots grated
  • 1/4 cup onions finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil for frying
  • 4 burger buns
  • Lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, and condiments of choice for serving

Instructions

  • Prepare the Mix:
In a bowl, mash the black beans until smooth, leaving a few chunks for texture. Add the oats, grated carrots, onions, garlic, cumin, paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix everything thoroughly.
  • Form Patties:
Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape them into patties. If the mixture feels too wet, add a bit more oats or breadcrumbs.
  • Cook the Patties:
Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy on the outside.
  • Assemble the Burgers:
Toast the burger buns if desired. Place the cooked patties on the buns and top with lettuce, tomato slices, avocado, and condiments of your choice (like ketchup or vegan mayo).
  • Serve:
Serve hot with fries or a side salad for a complete meal.

Notes

  • If you prefer a firmer patty, refrigerate the mix for 20 minutes before cooking.
  • You can bake the patties at 375°F (190°C) for 20 minutes instead of frying.
