For the Dough:
- 1 cup wheat flour
- 1 tablespoon oil
- Salt to taste
- Water, as needed
For the Filling:
- 1/2 cup grated coconut
- 1/2 cup roasted peanuts, crushed
- 2 teaspoons red chili powder
- 1 teaspoon tamarind paste
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon coriander powder
- Salt to taste
- A pinch of sugar (optional)
Prepare the Dough:In a bowl, mix the wheat flour, oil, and salt.Gradually add water and knead into a soft, pliable dough. Cover and set aside. Prepare the Filling:In a frying pan, dry roast the grated coconut and peanuts until golden.Add red chili powder, cumin seeds, coriander powder, tamarind paste, salt, and a pinch of sugar if desired. Mix well. Assemble the Masswadi:Roll out small portions of the dough into thin discs.Place a spoonful of the filling on each disc and roll it up tightly.Secure the edges with water to prevent unrolling. Steam the Masswadi:Place the rolls in a steamer and steam for about 15–20 minutes until cooked.Remove from the steamer and slice each roll into bite-sized pieces. Serve:Serve Masswadi hot with a side of coconut chutney or spicy curry for a traditional experience.
- For extra spice, add green chilies or more red chili powder to the filling.
- You can prepare Masswadi ahead and store it in the fridge for up to 2 days. Steam before serving.
