Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup red lentils (masoor dal)
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh cilantro leaves for garnish

Instructions
 

  • Rinse the red lentils under running water until the water runs clear.
  • In a saucepan, heat oil and add cumin seeds until they splutter.
  • Add the onions and sauté until golden brown. Then, add ginger-garlic paste and cook for a minute.
  • Add the tomatoes, turmeric, and chili powder, and cook until tomatoes are soft.
  • Add the lentils and water, stir, and cover. Let it simmer for 20 minutes or until lentils are soft.
  • Season with salt and adjust the consistency by adding water if needed.
  • Garnish with cilantro leaves and serve hot with rice or roti.

Notes

For a richer flavor, add a dollop of ghee or butter before serving.
