Equipment

  • Deep frying pan or skillet
  • Slotted spoon
  • Mixing bowl
  • Paper towels for draining

Ingredients

For the Batter:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sparkling water or club soda cold
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

For the Fritto Misto:

  • 200 grams shrimp peeled and deveined
  • 200 grams squid cleaned and cut into rings
  • 1 zucchini sliced into rounds
  • 1 bell pepper sliced into strips
  • 1 lemon cut into wedges
  • Salt to taste
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

Prepare the Batter:

  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, salt, and sparkling water until smooth. The batter should be light and slightly runny.

Heat the Oil:

  • In a deep frying pan or skillet, heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). The oil should be deep enough to submerge the ingredients.

Coat the Seafood and Vegetables:

  • Pat dry the shrimp, squid, and vegetables with paper towels.
  • Dip each piece into the batter, allowing any excess to drip off.

Fry the Ingredients:

  • Carefully place the battered seafood and vegetables into the hot oil.
  • Fry in small batches for 2-3 minutes or until golden and crispy.
  • Use a slotted spoon to remove the fried items and drain on paper towels.

Serve:

  • Sprinkle the Fritto Misto with salt while still hot.
  • Serve immediately with lemon wedges on the side.

Notes

  • Variation: Add fresh herbs like sage or parsley to the batter for extra flavor.
  • Storage: Fritto Misto is best eaten fresh, but leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 day. Reheat in an oven to restore crispiness.
  • Serving Tip: Serve with a garlic aioli or marinara sauce for dipping to enhance the flavors.
