Ingredients
  

For the Bisi Bele Bath Powder:

  • 2 tablespoons coriander seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon fenugreek seeds
  • 4-5 dried red chilies
  • 1/2- inch cinnamon stick
  • 2 cloves

For the Bisi Bele Bath:

  • 1 cup rice
  • 1/2 cup toor dal split pigeon peas
  • 2 tablespoons oil or ghee
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 10-12 curry leaves
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 1 carrot chopped
  • 1 potato chopped
  • 1/2 cup green beans chopped
  • 1/4 cup green peas
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon tamarind paste
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh cilantro leaves for garnish

Instructions
 

Prepare the Bisi Bele Bath Powder:

  • In a dry skillet, roast coriander seeds, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds, dried red chilies, cinnamon, and cloves until aromatic.
  • Let it cool and grind to a fine powder. Set aside.

Cook Rice and Lentils:

  • Rinse the rice and toor dal thoroughly.
  • In a pressure cooker, add the rice, toor dal, and 4 cups of water.
  • Pressure cook for 4-5 whistles or until the rice and lentils are soft. Set aside.

Prepare the Vegetables and Masala:

  • Heat oil or ghee in a large pan over medium heat.
  • Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
  • Add curry leaves and chopped onion, and sauté until the onions are golden brown.
  • Add chopped carrots, potatoes, green beans, and green peas. Cook for 5-6 minutes until the vegetables are tender.

Combine and Cook:

  • Add the cooked rice and lentils to the pan with the vegetables.
  • Mix in the prepared Bisi Bele Bath powder, turmeric powder, tamarind paste, and salt.
  • Add 1 cup of water and let it simmer for 10 minutes until all the flavors combine.

Serve:

  • Garnish with fresh cilantro leaves and serve hot with a dollop of ghee.

Notes

  • Variation: You can add vegetables like drumsticks or bell peppers for added flavor and nutrition.
  • Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
