For Dal:
- 1 cup dal (split pigeon peas)
- 3 cups water
- 1 onion (finely chopped)
- 2 tomatoes (finely chopped)
- 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp red chili powder
- Salt to taste
For Tadka:
- 2 tbsp ghee
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 5-6 garlic cloves (sliced)
- 2 dried red chilies
- A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
- Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
Cook the Dal:
Rinse the toor dal thoroughly and soak it for 10 minutes.
In a pressure cooker, add the soaked dal, water, chopped onion, chopped tomatoes, ginger-garlic paste, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt.
Cook for 3-4 whistles or until the dal is soft and creamy. Set aside.
Prepare the Tadka:
Heat ghee in a small pan over medium heat.
Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
Add sliced garlic and sauté until golden brown.
Add dried red chilies and asafoetida, and cook for another 30 seconds.
- Variation: You can use a combination of toor dal and masoor dal (red lentils) for a different texture and flavor.
- Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
