Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups pre-cooked cornmeal (PAN brand or similar)
  • 2 ½ cups warm water
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp butter (optional)
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or olive oil)

Instructions
 

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the cornmeal and salt.
  • Slowly add the warm water while mixing with your hands until a dough forms.
  • Add butter to the dough (optional) for a richer flavor.
  • Knead the dough until smooth, then let it rest for 5 minutes.
  • Divide the dough into 6 equal portions and shape them into discs, about ½ inch thick.
  • Heat a skillet over medium heat and lightly grease it with oil.
  • Cook the arepas on each side for 4-5 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
  • Optional: Transfer to a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for 5-7 minutes to finish cooking.
  • Slice open and fill with your choice of cheese, meats, or vegetables.
